๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐ฉ Last week, I attended a ๐๐๐ฑ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ and was struck by how many petitioners had no legal representation. In 2024, nearly ๐๐% ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ ๐ฌ๐, representing themselves in court. This problem isnโt limited to Tax Court. Across the U.S., millions of people face civil legal issues without access to affordable legal help, a crisis known as the ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ฉ. Legal scholars describe this as a system where people are often left with only two options: pay for an expensive private attorney or represent themselves. Texas is taking steps to address this issue. Under the leadership of ๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฑ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐ญ Santos Vargas (๐๐๐๐โ๐๐๐๐), access to justice has become a central priority through initiatives like ๐๐ญ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ. I go deeper into what the justice gap looks like, why it exists, and whatโs being done in Texas in my latest blog post. โฃ https://lnkd.in/g5TVqz5F _____________________________________________________________ #JusticeGap #AccessToJustice #LegalAid #ProBono #StateBarOfTexas
