In 1782, James Watt had a marketing problem. Mine owners didn’t understand steam engines. But they did understand horses. So Watt measured what a mill horse could do in one minute and coined a new unit for his engines: The Horsepower. More than 240 years later, we still use it. For cars, for ships, for locomotives. And yes: for electric motors. Our ABB IE6 SynRM motors reach up to 450 kW (roughly 603 horsepower).
