Physician training models play a big part in health workforce outcomes. One model does NOT fit all in a system that needs to train generalists, specialists, clinician-scientists, and health systems leaders. UCLIC, the University of Calgary Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship, trains medical students for rural generalist careers, in rural communities. Students don't just learn medicine, they learn to be a part of a rural healthcare team, and a part of a rural community. UCLIC has been running since 2008, and many of our grads are now rural physicians, and rural leaders. Check out this article on Dr. Emma Morin, a UCLIC grad working in Canmore, who is also Assistant Director of the UCLIC program. Dr. Morin nicely outlines the how rural training experiences are critical for rural health workforce outcomes. The model of training matters, and longitudinal integrated clerkship is a powerful model for rural communities to help train the future rural health workforce! https://lnkd.in/gEuM76dw
