Daughter of Civil Rights Leader Leaves Students with Inspiring History Lesson Reena Evers Everette, the daughter of Civil Rights Leader Medgar Evers, spoke to AAMU students Tuesday as part of the Beyond Normal Lecture Series Celebrating Black History Month. Everette told students no matter their major, they are all history majors. “Can you visualize not being able to go to the closest restroom? Have you ever been denied going into a movie theater? Have you ever been denied going through the front door of a store and trying on something? Think about what privileges that we have, because so many have fought tirelessly, died, been maimed, for the rights we now have.” “This is from Henry David Thoreau, my father’s favorite author. ‘One is not born in this world to do everything, but to do something.’ At a time when hope seems to be lost, our nation, our world seems to be divided, it’s very, very important for us to tell the story of how we’ve overcome, so that all generations, ones now, ones in the future, will understand the struggle. That’s what you’re doing with this important series.” Everette shared the personal story of how she remembers her father. “Medgar Evers, to the world, is a civil rights activist. Daddy is my father."
