You're on a client call. Something feels off. They’re walking you through “the process.” Timescales. Approval stages. Feedback windows. And somewhere in the middle of it, you realise: They’re not speaking to you like an advisor. They’re managing you like a supplier. You can’t bill at your best from that position. And deep down, both of you know it. Most recruiters respond by working harder. The ones who change it say something most won’t: “I'll be honest, I don’t think this process is set up for either of us to do our best work. Can we reset?” That conversation is uncomfortable for about four minutes. The ones who have it become the first call. Not the backup plan.
