Twenty years ago, we named our venture firm after a baseball statistic. In 1941, Boston’s own Ted Williams hit .406. It is still the last time a qualified MLB player finished a season above .400. Sorry, Yankees fans. But what we loved most wasn’t the number. It was how he got there. Ted Williams was famously disciplined about swinging only at pitches in his ‘happy zone’ — the ones built for his swing. He let the rest go by, even strikes, getting to .406 swinging only at pitches that mattered to him. From day one, this philosophy always shaped how we invest: the best outcomes come from knowing our zone, being patient, and swinging hard when the right pitch comes. This year marks our 20th season on the field. Over the next few months, we’ll share a few stories from the companies, the people, and a few pitches we’re glad we swung at as well as our thoughts on how we see the road ahead. Most importantly, we’ll celebrate the core and extended team that made it all possible. To everyone who has been part of the last 20 years: thank you. We’re still swinging hard and very much living in our happy zone. ⚾ #406at20
