Description

Senior Ignition SCADA Engineer — Data Center Power & Energy Monitoring

Remote (US) · Full-time

About the role

Senior, hands-on Ignition SCADA/EMS engineer to design and deploy the power & energy monitoring platform for hyperscale and colocation data centers. A single 10–15 MW facility’s UPS, diesel gensets, BESS, switchgear, and transformer/grid interfaces all need real-time monitoring — where an uncontrolled power event can damage equipment or take a site down. You’ll own the monitoring scheme, build it once as a standardized, templated Ignition application, and deploy it repeatably across multiple sites.

What you'll do

  • Design the SCADA architecture for data center electrical infrastructure — power distribution, UPS, diesel gens, BESS, switchgear, and transformer/grid metering
  • Build standardized, reusable Ignition applications (UDTs, templates, Perspective views) so a site design replicates to new facilities with minimal rework
  • Develop real-time monitoring screens (Perspective/Vision) showing power flows, equipment status, alarms, and trends across the full electrical chain
  • Configure data acquisition from PLCs, power meters, BMS, and protection relays over OPC-UA, Modbus, and MQTT/Sparkplug B
  • Design alarming and event logic to flag power anomalies (surges, transfer events, battery/genset state) before they damage equipment
  • Build the deployment pipeline so validated designs roll out to multiple sites consistently — gateway configuration, tag standardization, version control
  • Produce the design and model documentation (one-lines, I/O lists, tag schemas, network architecture) required before commissioning
  • Support commissioning, site acceptance testing, and ongoing optimization across deployed sites

What we're looking for

  • Deep, hands-on production experience with Inductive Automation Ignition — Perspective and/or Vision, UDTs, transaction groups, alarm pipelines, gateway architecture, and the tag system
  • Industrial controls / PLC background — programming and integrating PLCs in a real environment
  • Real experience with electrical power systems: UPS, diesel generators, BESS, switchgear, transformers, and grid/utility interfaces
  • Industrial protocols: OPC-UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, MQTT Sparkplug B; comfort designing a Unified Namespace
  • SCADA/EMS design from scratch — architecture, redundancy, historian, and network segmentation
  • Ability to standardize and templatize so designs deploy repeatably across sites

Nice to have

  • Direct data center experience (hyperscale or colo), or transferable critical-facility experience (utility, large industrial, microgrid/energy storage)
  • Familiarity with data center electrical topology, redundancy (N+1, 2N), and how a power event propagates through the chain
  • Multi-site / fleet deployment experience
  • Ignition certification (Core / Gold)
  • Python (Ignition’s Jython) scripting for custom logic and deployment automation
