Director of Transmission System Operator Markets (TSO)

EirGrid Group

Dublin

Description

As Transmission System Operator, EirGrid is at the heart of Ireland’s electricity system, ensuring that power flows safely, securely, and reliably from where it is generated to where it is needed. We manage the real-time operation of the power system and oversee the wholesale electricity market, balancing supply and demand every second of every day. We strengthen system resilience through the development and operation of interconnectors, and we plan and develop the transmission network, investing in the upgrades and expansion required to meet Ireland’s growing demand and support the transition to a low-carbon future. Our role is also expanding significantly to include operating, developing, and owning Ireland’s offshore transmission grid, a critical step in unlocking the potential of offshore wind energy.

The Opportunity

We are now seeking a Director of TSO Markets to join the Operations Chief Office.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and will play a pivotal role as the proactive voice of TSO Operations, providing strategic leadership across operational readiness, TSO market delivery, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement and customer outcomes.

The role holder will ensure the TSO is prepared for system, market and policy change while representing operational priorities internally and externally to influence decision-making, shape regulatory frameworks and support the secure, compliant and efficient evolution of the power system.

The Team

The Chief Operations Office is responsible for operating Ireland’s power system, EirGrid’s first and most fundamental responsibility. It operates today’s system with reliability, safety and security while adapting it for a very different future.

The TSO Markets function plays a critical role in operating and developing efficient and transparent electricity markets, delivering the energy transition and supporting affordable outcomes for consumers. It works across operational readiness, market development, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement and customer outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the strategic and proactive voice of TSO Operations, ensuring operational perspectives are represented in corporate decision-making, regulatory engagement, market development and external forums.
  • Lead readiness, transformation and change programmes across TSO Operations, ensuring the organisation is prepared for new operational, market, regulatory and system challenges.
  • Influence and engage key external stakeholders including government departments, regulators and industry bodies, helping shape policy, regulatory positions and market developments.
  • Champion compliance with local and EU regulatory obligations, embedding a strong culture of accountability, assurance and continuous improvement.
  • Lead critical TSO market functions, including areas such as FASS, capacity markets and renewable auction interfaces.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in operational and market functions, identifying opportunities to modernise processes, improve performance and support delivery of the future power system.
  • Champion customer and stakeholder needs, ensuring operational, market and regulatory decisions are informed by customer impact, service quality and the wider public interest.
  • Develop strategic and operational business plans for the function, aligning priorities, resources and delivery programmes to corporate objectives and sectoral change.
  • Lead the development of price control submissions and manage subsequent regulatory allowances and approvals.
  • Support executive and board-level decision-making through clear advice, evidence-based recommendations and strong judgement on operational, regulatory and market risks.

About you

Successful Candidates Will Have

  • Significant senior leadership experience, ideally gained in the electricity industry or in a complex, regulated environment.
  • A deep understanding of TSO markets, power systems and related Irish and EU regulatory obligations.
  • Extensive experience leading operational functions and delivering complex programmes and projects.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and influencing EU, Government and Regulatory Authority stakeholders.
  • Experience in the development and management of regulatory price control submissions, allowances and approvals.
  • Strong people leadership capability, including experience leading through senior managers, developing talent and creating high-performing, collaborative teams.
