Position Overview-
VelaFi is seeking a highly skilled Backend Software Engineer to help build the core financial infrastructure powering our global payments platform. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services that enable secure, scalable, and reliable cross-border payments by connecting banking rails, stablecoin networks, liquidity providers, and payment partners.
As a member of our engineering team, you'll build mission-critical systems supporting payments, treasury, pricing, compliance, and reconciliation. Depending on your experience and business priorities, you'll have the opportunity to contribute across multiple areas of the platform while helping shape the architecture of a rapidly growing global fintech company.
This is a high-impact, high-ownership role where engineering excellence, system reliability, and scalability are essential.
Location Preferred: Remote within APAC
This is a fully remote position open to candidates across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Preference will be given to candidates based in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, or other APAC markets. Candidates should be comfortable collaborating across multiple time zones and working closely with teams in Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
Professional proficiency in both Mandarin and English is required to support cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product, and business teams. Occasional travel may be required based on business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Platform Development
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java (Spring Boot) and modern software engineering best practices.
- Build secure, high-performance systems that power global payment infrastructure.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested production code.
- Design relational database schemas and optimize SQL queries for performance and scalability.
- Build event-driven services using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
Payments & Financial Infrastructure
- Build and enhance payment routing, treasury, liquidity, and reconciliation services.
- Develop pricing engine functionality supporting real-time FX pricing across payment corridors.
- Design reliable money movement workflows with strong auditability and transactional integrity.
- Support stablecoin payment flows, custody integrations, and financial settlement processes.
- Improve reconciliation, idempotency, and accounting accuracy across financial systems.
API & Third-Party Integrations
- Design and maintain APIs supporting internal services and external financial partners.
- Integrate banking APIs, liquidity providers, custody platforms, payment processors, and KYC/KYB vendors.
- Ensure high availability, security, and reliability across all integrations.
Platform Reliability & Engineering Excellence
- Own services throughout their full lifecycle, from design through production support.
- Monitor application performance and continuously improve reliability and scalability.
- Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Treasury, Compliance, DevOps, and Engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience.
- Strong experience developing Java applications using Spring Boot (or comparable experience with Go, Kotlin, or similar languages with willingness to work primarily in Java).
- Strong knowledge of relational databases, SQL optimization, and schema design.
- Experience building event-driven systems using Kafka or similar messaging technologies.
- Experience designing RESTful APIs and integrating third-party platforms.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, software architecture, and transactional integrity.
- Professional proficiency in Mandarin and English.
- Comfortable working in agile, fast-paced startup or scale-up environments.

- Knowledge of payment routing, treasury, liquidity management, or reconciliation systems.
- Experience building high-volume, low-latency distributed systems.
- Familiarity with financial ledgers or double-entry accounting systems.
- Experience with cloud-native infrastructure, containerization, and microservices architecture.
