Job Summary
The Court Monitor is responsible for supporting the accurate recording and monitoring of court proceedings through digital audio recording systems. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the integrity of official court records by conducting equipment testing, monitoring live hearings, creating and maintaining hearing logs, and ensuring audio recordings are properly archived. The incumbent will work closely with court personnel and internal teams to provide technical and operational support, helping to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted delivery of court reporting services.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct microphone and audio equipment testing prior to hearings to ensure recording systems are functioning effectively.
- Monitor live court proceedings and accurately record key hearing events within designated logging systems.
- Create, maintain, and edit hearing logs ("logsheets") to provide an accurate record of proceedings.
- Prepare, review, and archive audio recordings in accordance with established operational procedures.
- Generate and submit daily, weekly, and ad-hoc operational reports as required.
- Liaise with court staff, judicial officers, and internal stakeholders regarding hearing schedules and recording activities.
- Provide first-level technical support for courtroom hearing setups, recording servers, and associated audio recording systems, escalating technical issues when necessary.
- Troubleshoot basic recording system, hardware, and connectivity issues to minimize disruptions to hearings.
- Conduct Sunday microphone testing activities independently, ensuring all assigned courtrooms are fully operational for upcoming hearings.
- Support private logging assignments, including working beyond standard business hours (after 6:00 PM) when operationally required, particularly for Supreme Court and private logging matters.
- Ensure confidentiality, security, and proper handling of court recordings and hearing-related information at all times.
- Adhere to court, client, and Epiq operational procedures, quality standards, and service level requirements.
Experience & Requirements
- Diploma, Higher NITEC, or equivalent qualification preferred.
- 1+ years of experience in audio recording, courtroom operations, transcription support, technical support, AV operations, or a related environment.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to capture and maintain accurate hearing logs.
- Basic understanding of audio recording systems, microphones, and AV equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot simple technical issues and follow established escalation procedures.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with court personnel and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and remain focused during lengthy court proceedings.
- Comfortable handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including Sundays, overtime, and after-hours assignments when operationally required.
- Prior experience in legal services, court reporting, digital recording, or transcription environments will be an advantage.
