Job Summary

The Enhancement Leadman supports the Enhancement Foreman in the staging, installation, and completion of assigned landscape enhancement projects. This role ensures that all installations are completed on schedule and in compliance with company policies, procedures, and established quality and safety standards. The Leadman assists in supervising a crew responsible for tasks such as site grading (rough and finish), installation of drainage and irrigation systems, planting of various plant materials (including trees, shrubs, vines, and ground covers), and performing basic concrete flatwork and masonry. The Enhancement Leadman possesses a working knowledge of landscape construction plans, details, and specifications, as well as equipment operation and plant identification. They are proficient with the use of tools and equipment and demonstrate an understanding of plant material quality and basic horticultural practices.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs site rough and finish grading, and installs the following: drainage, irrigation controllers and systems, plant material of varying sizes, mulch, and bark.
  • Occasionally operates and maintains a company-assigned vehicle to ensure crew members report to designated work areas on time.
  • Assists in supervising and directing crew members in preparing the necessary equipment, tools, and materials for the day’s work.
  • Receives assigned job site information and discusses any special instructions with the crew, including job schedules and task completion expectations.
  • Assists in reviewing site plans in preparation for installation and orders materials and equipment as needed.
  • Helps maintain job material inventories and ensures the Enhancement Foreman is alerted to any shortages in materials.
  • Communicates on personnel issues that may arise with crew members and works with the Supervisor to rectify any concerns.
  • Ensures proper delegation of duties to crew members.
  • Trains crew members in all aspects of daily activities and demonstrates commitment in their leadership role.
  • Adheres to the Fleet Safety and Vehicle Management Policy.
  • Observes all safety rules and ensures fellow workers adhere to all safety practices, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintains neat and organized housekeeping standards on the job, truck bed, truck cab, trailer, and assigned field area.
  • Supports the Enhancement Foreman and ensures that appropriate rest and meal periods are observed in accordance with company requirements.
  • Observes the Company’s policies and procedures, including dress standards, accurate time sheet payroll reporting, and all related job records.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Working knowledge of ornamental horticulture, including soil preparation, and the planting and care of trees, shrubs, and groundcover.
  • Proper handling and application of chemicals and fertilizers.
  • Installation of plant material.
  • Installation, operation, and troubleshooting of irrigation systems, including controllers, valves, sprinkler heads, backflows, and quick couplers.
  • Understanding of landscape construction plans, details, and specifications.
  • Familiarity with plant material quality standards.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and time management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking to identify problems and take appropriate action.
  • Demonstrates initiative, professionalism, and technical proficiency.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Able to delegate tasks and take responsibility.
  • Proficient in using handheld electronic devices for timekeeping.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Required License/Certification

Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and auto insurance.

Must maintain an acceptable driving record

Education/Experience

Minimum of four years of landscape construction/installation experience and a minimum of one year supervising installation crews.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting, carrying, and manipulating objects up to 50 pounds for varying periods of time. Constant standing, sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, bending, climbing, twisting, traversing uneven ground, reaching, pulling, stretching, digging, grasping, and gripping (hand tools and equipment), getting in and out of vehicles (vehicle cab and bed) throughout the day.
  • Must be able to wear all personal protective equipment according to company Safety, Health, and Environmental Policies, Industry Related ANSI Safety Requirements, and OSHA Regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions are outdoors with exposure to the following: Hot and cold temperatures, sudden changes in temperatures, varying levels of noise, slippery surfaces, rain, dust/dirt, fumes, wind, uneven ground, and landscaped slopes.

EQUIPMENT/MACHINARY

A wide range of hand tools, including but not limited to: hammers, wire cutters, rakes and shovels, motorized augers, wackers/compactors, backhoes, skid steers, grading tractors, excavators, and grading equipment.
