GROUNDSKEEPER

Basic Function

Under the direction of a school principal or Senior Groundskeeper, perform gardening work on school grounds and District landscaped areas; keep school campus clean and neat in appearance.

Representative Duties

Cultivate, weed, mow and edge lawns; rake leaves and remove trash; sweep walkways. E

Repair and maintain sprinkler systems including athletic field systems. E

Trim shrubs, trees and flowers; maintain indoor plants as required. E

Clean asphalt areas and play fields. E

Fertilize flowers, plants, trees and lawns. E

Clean lunch areas and check and clean outdoor drains; clean area after sports events. E

Perform preventative maintenance on equipment; remove graffiti as necessary. E

Install landscaping and plants of varying types and sizes. E

Operate truck, power sweeper, mower, skip loader, posthole digger and hand tools as needed. E

Move and maintain spectator bleachers from sports events. E

Mix and spray pesticides on fence lines and areas as necessary.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge And Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Shrubs, plants and lawn care.

Hand and power tools used in groundskeeping.

Methods, materials and practices used in gardening work.

Health and safety regulations.

Pesticides and their use.

Ability To

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Work cooperatively with others.

Operate power equipment.

Perform preventative maintenance on power equipment.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Education And Experience

Perform the essential functions of the job.

Any combination equivalent to one year of experience in groundskeeping; completion of courses in landscaping and gardening design desirable.

Licenses And Other Requirements

Valid California driver's license.

Environment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Outdoor environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors and pollen.

Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.

Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Abilities

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate groundskeeping tools and equipment.

Walking and standing for extended periods of time.

Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds.

Heavy physical labor.

Seeing to perform groundskeeping work, read materials and drive a vehicle.

Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.

Hazards

Chemicals from pesticides.
