The Opportunity

This position works out of our Munich location in the Laralab GmbH.

We are building next-generation AI- and cloud-based medical software, combining startup speed with the scale of a global healthcare leader.

Our Munich engineering team is a growing hub within Abbott’s Digital Solutions division. As we scale, we are strengthening our global engineering capabilities in a regulated environment.

The Senior Engineering Manager & Munich Site Lead will drive this growth by scaling delivery, building high-performing teams, and establishing Munich as a key site within the organization.

This role partners closely with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver scalable, compliant software across cloud and edge systems, while leading the local site’s culture, growth, and global integration.

Your Tasks

Software Engineering Leadership

  • Lead, mentor and scale distributed engineering teams; ensure high-quality execution, predictable delivery, and continuous improvement.
  • Represent engineering with internal executives, customers, partners, and regulatory bodies.
  • Work with key engineers to drive the advancement/integration of the current heart.ai product into a scalable medical software platform.
  • Work with relevant stakeholders to support the advancement/integration of the current heart.ai engineering processes into a global Digital Solutions quality management system.
  • Manage external development partners, vendors, and suppliers; support sourcing, cost optimization, and delivery excellence.
  • Support the hiring of engineering talent, with emphasis on innovative modern, UX-focused, AI- and cloud-based medical software solutions.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate technical, delivery, and integration risks across programs.

Munich Site Leadership

  • Serve as the site leader for the Munich Digital Solutions organization 
  • Lead, inspire, and further develop the growing team of currently ~30 employees, including coaching and mentoring direct reports.
  • Guide long‑term Munich team vision, providing direction on key organizational and strategic decisions; support budgeting and resourcing activities; ensure visibility, alignment, and advocacy with corporate and business unit leadership.
  • Define annual Munich site objectives and drive execution.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for site‑related people, operational, and organizational challenges, partnering with global Digital Solutions leadership and Abbott functional leaders as needed. 
  • Identify learning and development opportunities for the Munich team, including Abbott trainings, external trainings, and field visit programs. 

Your Qualification

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10+ years in software engineering with 5+ years leading multi-team engineering organizations building cloud-native or hybrid solutions.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills; ability to influence across enterprise functions (Product, Marketing, IT, Security, Compliance); proven ability to make objectives of different stakeholders converge into a combined roadmap.
  • Demonstrated success leading the development, delivery and operation of complex, scalable systems across cloud and/or edge.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree (e.g., MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Engineering Management).
  • Experience in regulated healthcare, medical devices, or similarly regulated industries; familiarity with quality systems and software lifecycle standards (e.g., IEC 62304) is a plus.
  • Proven experience with scaling and integrating small, local teams into an international enterprise context.
  • Track record of developing platform-based software products that enable self-service and scale across product teams (SDKs, API-based products, templates, reference architectures).
  • Experience working with third-party vendors, SLAs, and managing technical contracts or sourcing negotiations.
