Machine Learning Engineering Manager

Description

Machine Learning Engineering Manager

Sydney CBD (Kent Street) · Hybrid · Permanent, full-time · Salary negotiable

This is a rare chance to build something from the ground floor and see it scale across an entire organisation.

icare is early in its data and machine learning journey, and this role lays the engineering foundation the rest of it stands on.

About the role

This is an opportunity to establish the Machine Learning Engineering capability that will enable AI systems to be developed, deployed and operated reliably across icare.

As Machine Learning Engineering Manager, you'll define the engineering practices, standards and technical foundations that turn AI into secure, production-ready systems.

The role asks you to zoom out to enterprise strategy and zoom back in to the deployment detail, often in the same day. As the function grows, so does the team you build and lead around it.

What you’ll do - the engineering

  • Take models into production, making the right trade-offs against the broader data strategy
  • Design systems that hold up across API and service boundaries, with the metrics and monitoring to keep them performant for the life of the system
  • Build the standards, tooling and practices that lift quality and cut cycle time across the Data Science and engineering teams
  • Turn complex business problems into scalable, production-ready solutions, and spot the technical limits before they become risk

What you’ll do - the leadership

  • Build and structure the engineering team so the right people sit in the right roles with clear ownership
  • Coach and mentor engineers and Data Scientists, and set the cultural tone alongside the Head of Data Science and AI
  • Partner across Data Platforms, Architecture, Security, Privacy and Governance so everything you ship aligns with enterprise standards
  • Advise on the engineering and operational shape of icare’s enterprise strategy

What you’ll bring

  • At least 8 years in Machine Learning Engineering, MLOps or DevOps, including platforms or practices you’ve built from the ground up
  • A track record deploying systems into production (cloud or hybrid), including monitoring you’ve designed and stood up yourself
  • The range to operate at both altitudes - shaping strategy one moment, hands-on in the system the next
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers, with the stakeholder skills to influence across technical and non-technical teams and at every level
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Snowflake, and comfort working Agile (Scrum, JIRA)

What’s in it for you

  • A corporate wellbeing program with subsidised gym membership, free flu vaccinations and health checks
  • 17.5% annual leave loading and an extra day’s leave through icare day
  • Learning and development aligned to icare’s Core Capabilities
  • Recognition through Our People Awards - on-the-spot, quarterly and annual
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
