About The Role
The Principal Software Engineer, Backend at Headspace plays a pivotal role in shaping the technical foundation of our platform as we scale to serve millions of users globally. This remote position, with preferred locations in New York City, Seattle, or San Francisco, involves leading the architecture and design of high-scale, low-latency backend systems that are core to the company's user experience and business operations. The role requires a strategic thinker and technical leader capable of defining long-term technical strategies, driving engineering excellence, and influencing cross-functional teams. As a key contributor, you will own end-to-end development of features, mentor engineering teams, and ensure operational reliability through best practices in observability and system resilience. Your expertise will help accelerate innovation, improve system performance, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions aligned with Headspace's mission to improve mental health accessibility worldwide.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and scaling production-grade APIs and distributed backend systems
- Deep expertise in system design and software architecture, capable of decomposing complex problems into scalable, maintainable components
- Extensive experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and Python, especially in high-scale backend service development
- Proven experience leading the design and delivery of complex software features in asynchronous and distributed team environments
- Strong skills in unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, along with building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical direction and align stakeholders
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading cross-functional technical initiatives
- Ownership mindset with the ability to thrive in ambiguity, raise the bar, and take accountability for outcomes
- Ability to make strategic technical decisions with a pragmatic approach considering long-term impact and technical debt
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and design of high-scale, low-latency backend applications critical to Headspace's platform and user experience
- Define and implement long-term technical strategies and roadmaps for complex systems and services
- Drive engineering excellence by setting coding standards, best practices, and development processes across teams
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Data, Security, and Infrastructure teams to align technical vision with business objectives
- Author technical specifications and RFCs to guide critical design decisions and platform evolution
- Take ownership of features from ideation through deployment, monitoring, and maintenance in production environments
- Mentor and develop engineering talent, fostering an inclusive and high-impact team culture
- Enhance operational reliability by developing resilient systems, implementing observability practices, and guiding production support
- Identify systemic issues and architect platform-level solutions with reusability and extensibility in mind
- Provide technical escalation support and resolve complex engineering challenges efficiently
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices, evaluating their applicability to Headspace’s platform
