Description

Want to Use AI to Tackle Complex, Real-World Problems?

Join Avertro, a venture-backed cybersecurity startup building a platform that empowers security leaders to manage cyber risk with confidence. We’re tackling one of the industry’s hardest challenges: giving CISOs and boards trustworthy, actionable answers, fast.

We’re on the lookout for an Software Engineer - AI/ML who balances strong AI/ML fundamentals with hands-on-software engineering experience. You’ll work at the intersection of LLMs, data pipelines, and production cloud infrastructure; building capabilities that security leaders rely on every day.

If you're looking to build real AI that goes beyond theory, and work at the intersection of NLP, data enrichment, and impactful product design, this could be the role for you.

The Opportunity

As a Software Engineer - AI/ML, you’ll build the AI capabilities at the core of our platform - from retrieval-augmented chatbots and agents to the pipelines and Model Context Protocol (MCP) infrastructure that connect them safely to live customer data. Working closely with our Engineering and Product leads, you’ll ship real features end-to-end, with direct visibility into how your work shapes the product and company.

🧩 What You’ll Do

  • AI Pipelines: Design and maintain reliable, reproducible data-processing and text-generation pipelines that power our AI features.
  • Retrieval & Search: Tune our vector search stack - embeddings, FAISS indexes, and rerankers - to improve retrieval recall and precision.
  • Chatbots & Agents: Own grounding, multi-turn conversation state, workflow logic, and citation features for our chatbot assistants.
  • MCP Infrastructure: Contribute to our production Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, standardising how external models and internal interfaces safely query live backend data.
  • GRC Guardrails: Design liability-aware prompts and structured output validators so AI responses are accurate, and appropriately caveated.
  • Multi-Tenant Data Protection: Deliver serverless microservices that enforce strict customer data isolation at the infrastructure and runtime level.
  • Evaluation & MLOps: Expand our test suites, build cost-aware LLM integration tests, and help curate golden datasets that protect production from silent regressions.
  • Ship to AWS: Package, test, and deploy AI microservices on AWS, optimising for performance and reliability.

🔍 What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 2 - 4 years of production engineering experience, with hands-on work building, and maintaining GenAI/NLP systems.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals with proficiency in Python, API design and backend development.
  • Demonstrated experience building LLM-powered features, preferably building chatbot interfaces, agents or managing LLM state and session context across multi-turn interactions.
  • A solid understanding of embedding-based retrieval and how to get LLMs to reliable, structured output.
  • Experience integrating with LLM providers via API and deploying services to AWS (Lambda, ECS, or similar); AWS Bedrock and Docker experience are a plus.
  • Working knowledge of LLM security and evaluation methods - prompt injection, input/output sanitisation and genuine curiosity to go deeper.
  • A bias for action: you move fast, take ownership, and stay focused on delivering real value to users.
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working at startup pace.

Bonus Points

  • GRC domain expertise: Familiarity with cybersecurity compliance frameworks (e.g ISO 27001), and an ability to translate compliance requirements into technical constraints.
  • MCP and agentic architecture: Experience designing or securing MCP servers, or orchestrating agents capable of multi-step tool execution.
  • Full-stack exposure: Experience with TypeScript, React, or GraphQL.

💥 Why You’ll Love Working With Us

  • Be part of a venture-backed startup solving one of cybersecurity’s biggest gaps.
