About the Employer:

Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) is an associated office of the Department of Justice, Home Affairs & Migration and plays a pivotal role in Ireland’s criminal justice system. Its mission is to provide the Irish Justice System with a high-quality integrated Forensic Service through independent, expert scientific analysis and advice to best international standards.

FSI is based in a new purpose-built facility at the Backweston Laboratory Campus, Celbridge, Co. Kildare. It currently has 210 staff, which includes scientists, Garda experts and analysts trained in forensic testing and reporting techniques, supported by administration and ICT professionals. FSI is expected to increase staffing and capacity in the coming years to support the growing demand for its services.

Analytical staff work across three main disciplines:

• Physical Analysis

• Chemical Analysis and

• DNA and Biological Analysis.

FSI now has vacancies at entry level Laboratory Analyst. This is a great opportunity for scientific and technical professionals to become involved in a dynamic and growing professional STEM-based organisation in a progressive field that is critical for Ireland’s criminal Justice system.

About the Role:

Reporting to a Senior Laboratory Analyst, Laboratory Analysts will be involved in delivering on a range of analytical techniques and generating reliable results on an on-going basis. Laboratory Analysts at FSI play a pivotal role in ensuring that laboratory equipment and processes are operating to the necessary high standards for an ISO-accredited organisation. Successful candidates will also help implement and validate new techniques to ensure that FSI is at the forefront of forensic technology and practice.

The Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Role will include some or all of the following:

• Operating, calibrating and maintaining specific instruments and automated analytical equipment;
• Performing routine analyses on drugs, body fluids or trace evidence;
• Ensuring smooth running of the laboratory, e.g. stock control, room supplies, reagents etc;
• Ensuring that all analyses are carried out in accordance with the Laboratory’s quality and safety policies;
• Acquiring knowledge of underlying analytical principles and relevant legislative or other background information relevant to the task being performed;
• Using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) appropriately;
• Maintaining records of analytical data and calculations and movements of exhibits and samples;
• Participating in collaborative and validation studies and performing other non- routine analyses under the supervision of scientists;
• Reporting all analytical results to supervisory staff in an efficient and timely manner; and
• Giving evidence in Court if required.
