Role: Principal Engineer — Healthcare AI & Cloud

Location: United States (Remote)

Travel: Up to 50% first 90 days, approximately 25% thereafter

The Opportunity: This is not a PowerPoint role.

• We are looking for a Principal Engineer who has risen through engineering work — someone who still writes code, still debugs production issues, and still gets energized by a hard technical problem. You will be the technical anchor on a high-stakes healthcare AI engagement, working directly alongside a client engineering leadership team that is deeply hands-on itself.
• You will own the technical direction, make build-vs-buy decisions, establish engineering standards, and execute alongside the team — not above it. Over time, you will be the person mid and junior engineers orient around.
• If you have moved into architecture but stayed close to the code — and if purely advisory roles feel incomplete to you — this is built for you.

What You Will Own

• End-to-end technical ownership of a healthcare AI platform built on GCP — from system design through production deployment
• Hands-on delivery — you write code, review code, and set the standard for what good looks like on this engagement
• R&D leadership — evaluate and prototype AI/ML applicability to clinical workflows; separate signal from noise on what is worth building
• Architecture decisions — microservices design, data flow, API contracts, cloud infrastructure, and integration patterns across the stack
• Technical coaching — onshore team primarily, with potential offshore coordination; lead by doing, not by directing
• Client partnership — serve as the technical face of the engagement; translate between engineering reality and clinical/business need with credibility on both sides

The Stack — Non-Negotiable

• GCP production depth — GKE, Pub/Sub, Cloud Spanner, Cloud Run, BigQuery, IAM, VPC
• Java / Spring Boot — enterprise-grade; you design and build production microservice architectures
• Python — strong and hands-on; you write it, not just read it; FastAPI, data pipelines, AI/ML integration
• Kubernetes / GKE — you have operated clusters in production, not just deployed to them
• Event-driven architecture — Kafka or Pub/Sub; you understand delivery semantics, back-pressure, consumer group design
• CI/CD — GitHub Actions, Cloud Build, or equivalent; you have built pipelines, not just used them
• Terraform or equivalent IaC — you have written it, not just modified templates

AI / ML Context

• You do not need to be an ML researcher. You need to understand where AI is applicable in regulated clinical environments, where it is not, and how to build systems that incorporate model outputs responsibly. Experience with LLM APIs, agentic frameworks (LangChain, ADK, MCP), or applied ML in production is a strong differentiator.

Who You Are

• 10 to 18 years of software engineering experience, with the last several at principal, staff, or senior lead level
• You have built systems from the ground up — not inherited and maintained them
• You are still hands-on by choice — architecture without implementation feels incomplete to you
• You have worked in or adjacent to regulated industries — healthcare, fintech, or government
• You can hold a peer technical conversation with a client engineering director and a clinical operations lead in the same afternoon
• You have a track record of making mid and junior engineers better — not by managing them but by working alongside them at a standard worth following
• EST or CST home base strongly preferred
