About the Role
This role shall support all legal, contractual, and compliance requirements for the company’s logistics operations. Also review and manage contracts, handle claims and disputes, ensure statutory compliance, and provide actionable legal advice to the operations, commercial, procurement, and finance teams. This role acts as the primary internal point of contact for operational legal issues across depots, transport vendors, shipping lines, and customers.
Responsibilities
- Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements:
- Container leasing agreements
- Transport & haulage contracts
- Vendor/Transporter agreements
- Storage/yard agreements
- Shipping line contracts
- Customer service agreements (CSA/SLAs)
- Claims, Disputes & Litigation:
- Handle vessel claims in addition to container claims.
- Handle demurrage/detention disputes with customers and shipping lines.
- Manage container damage claims (cleaning, repair charges).
- Coordinate with external lawyers on litigation, arbitration, and recovery matters.
- Support operations teams during disputes on shortages, misdeclaration, accidents, or cargo contamination.
- Maintain MIS for all open and closed cases.
- Support to Operations & Business Teams:
- Provide legal guidance on container repairs, vendor liabilities, loss/damage disputes, and insurance claims.
- Review operational SOPs, ensuring legal safeguards are included.
- Work with procurement to legally vet all vendor onboardings.
- Review customer credit terms, penalty clauses, and payment risks.
- Support business development with compliant contract templates and proposal review.
- Risk Mitigation & Policy Development:
- Identify legal risks across container operations, CFS/ICD processes, and transport networks.
- Draft internal regulations, DoA (Delegation of Authority), and risk-control processes.
- Conduct legal training for Ops/Commercial teams on documentation standards and liabilities.
- Ensure company assets (containers, yards, equipment) are legally protected.
Qualifications
- LLB or BA LLB mandatory
- Proven expertise in managing cargo liability matters
- 6–8 years of experience in logistics, shipping, container leasing, freight forwarding, or related domain
- Experience managing contracts, compliance, and claims in a logistics environment.
- Knowledge of legal compliance with regards to SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, flag state requirements etc.
- Exposure to arbitration, negotiation, and vendor/customer dispute management
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in managing cargo liability matters
- Experience managing contracts, compliance, and claims in a logistics environment.
- Knowledge of legal compliance with regards to SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, flag state requirements etc.
- Exposure to arbitration, negotiation, and vendor/customer dispute management
