Campus Support Officer

University of the West of England

Bristol

Description

Are you calm under pressure, great with people, and passionate about creating a safe, respectful and welcoming campus environment? We’re looking for Campus Support Officers to join our dedicated Campus Support team and help us deliver an exceptional student-centred, security and support service to our university community. We have a number of roles available on both the day and night teams.

As a Campus Support Officer, you will play a key role in keeping our students, staff, visitors and facilities safe. At the heart of this role is a commitment to the student experience—ensuring every interaction is professional, respectful, and supportive, while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.

Working as part of a supportive team, you’ll provide a prompt, calm and boundaried first response to incidents and enquiries. You will manage incidents confidently and consistently, balancing empathy with professionalism, and ensuring appropriate escalation where required.

You will provide a responsive security presence across our campuses, operate control room systems, and act as a friendly, visible ambassador for the University, helpful first point of contact.

Every day is different, and you’ll work across a range of environments—from patrols and reception duties to emergency situations and major University events.

What you’ll be doing

  • Delivering excellent customer service as an ambassador for UWE
  • Carrying out internal and external patrols on foot or by vehicle
  • Managing and responding to incidents, including challenging or distressing situations
  • Operating security systems including CCTV, access control, intruder detection and alarms
  • Providing professional control room and front-of-house services
  • Supporting University events such as Open Days and Moving In
  • Maintaining accurate records, logs and incident reports
  • Working collaboratively with other campus teams
  • Supporting gritting/snow clearance during adverse weather when required
  • Ensuring buildings are secure and communal areas are safe and accessible

About You

You are a calm, confident and approachable professional who understands that the student experience is at the heart of everything we do, while recognising your role in supporting the wider university community, including staff and visitors.

You take pride in delivering a prompt, safe and clearly boundaried first response, ensuring that everyone you engage with feels respected, supported and treated fairly. You are skilled at balancing empathy with professionalism—able to provide reassurance and understanding to students, while maintaining clear boundaries and applying policies consistently.

You communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and feel confident adapting your approach depending on the situation—whether supporting a distressed student, assisting a member of staff, or helping a visitor navigate campus safely.

Resilient under pressure, you remain composed in challenging and emergency situations, making sound decisions that prioritise safety, wellbeing and a positive experience. You understand when to take action, when to provide support, and when to escalate appropriately.

As a team player, you work collaboratively with colleagues and university partners to deliver a consistent, high-quality service that reflects our commitment to a safe, inclusive and student-focused environment for all.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Experience in a customer-facing, security or support role
  • The ability to deliver a calm, proportionate and boundaried first response
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good judgement and confidence in upholding policies and expectations
  • A proactive approach to safety and enhancing the student experience

Above all, you are someone who is committed to creating an environment where students are supported to thrive, and where staff and visitors feel equally safe, welcomed and respected.

What we’re looking for

Essential:

  • A good standard of general education or relevant security experience in a large organisation
  • Evidence of excellent customer service skills
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • First Aid at Work (or willingness to train)
  • Ability to work up to 12-hour shifts, including moving unaided across varied terrain

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Security Guarding or similar qualification
  • Understanding of fire evacuation procedures and health & safety guidance
