Description

Data Governance Manager (Unstructured Data & AI)

📍 Remote (UK) | 🌍 Global remit | 🏢 Occasional travel to Bracknell / London

We're hiring a Data Governance Manager to lead a greenfield initiative shaping how we manage and unlock value from unstructured data across a global organisation.

This is a high-impact role sitting at the intersection of knowledge management, data governance, and AI, with a clear mandate to make our data trusted, scalable, and AI-ready.

You'll act as the bridge between business and IT-bringing enough technical depth to engage IT teams, alongside the commercial awareness to influence stakeholders across functions such as Sales and Operations.

Why this role stands out

  • Global ownership with visibility across multiple business units
  • ✅ True greenfield opportunity-define the strategy from day one
  • ✅ Play a key role in AI adoption and data readiness
  • ✅ Work closely with an established Structured Data Governance lead
  • ✅ Flexible remote setup, with occasional in-person collaboration

What you'll be doing

🔹 Build the unstructured data governance approach

  • Design and implement a lightweight, scalable governance framework focused on adoption-not bureaucracy
  • Define how unstructured data (e.g. SharePoint, documents, content, collaboration tools) is managed across its lifecycle
  • Create a model that works across a decentralised, global organisation

🔹 Drive knowledge management maturity

  • Improve how knowledge is created, organised, and maintained
  • Develop standards for taxonomy, metadata, and content lifecycle
  • Increase discoverability, trust, and usability of business-critical information

🔹 Enable AI & business value

  • Work with stakeholders to identify where AI can deliver real value
  • Ensure data is structured and governed appropriately for AI and GenAI use cases (including chatbots)
  • Mitigate risks linked to poor data quality and unmanaged content

🔹 Shape the roadmap (first 3-6 months)

  • Conduct a current state assessment of data and knowledge practices
  • Identify key risks and opportunities
  • Develop a clear, prioritised plan addressing the most critical issues
  • Begin embedding a governance model aligned with business needs

🔹 Influence and embed change

  • Partner with stakeholders across business and IT functions globally
  • Build engagement and drive adoption without formal authority
  • Communicate governance in clear, commercial terms

What we're looking for

✅ Experience in data governance, information management, or knowledge management

✅ Strong understanding of data privacy and compliance (e.g. GDPR)

✅ Exposure to AI / GenAI (this could include chatbot or AI-enabled tools)

✅ Confident working across technical and non-technical stakeholders

✅ Background in IT, IT Service Management, or similar is advantageous

✅ Experience with Microsoft tools (SharePoint, M365)

✅ A proactive, ownership-driven mindset-someone who brings a plan and delivers outcomes

What will make you successful

  • You're commercially aware and comfortable engaging senior stakeholders
  • You simplify complex topics into actionable solutions
  • You thrive in ambiguous environments and enjoy building from scratch
  • You focus on pragmatic governance that people will actually adopt

Additional details

  • 🌍 Global role with cross-functional exposure
  • ✈️ Minimal travel (typically 1-2 international trips per year)
  • 🏢 UK-based remote role with occasional presence in Bracknell/London (e.g. monthly meetings)
  • 💰 We offer a competitive remuneration package, including a base salary and performance-based variable (MBO bonus)

The opportunity

With organisations accelerating their AI adoption, governance of unstructured data has become a critical capability.

This role offers the chance to define and lead that capability end-to-end, shaping how the business uses data and AI-while building something genuinely impactful from the ground up.
