ABOUT US:
Verantum (formerly Phoenix Energy Technologies, Inc.) is a data-driven building asset performance company. Our platform unifies operational telemetry, asset identity data, and service history into an actionable asset record — enabling multi-site operators to make defensible maintenance, repair, and replacement decisions at scale. We support organizations responsible for 45,000+ buildings and 2.5M+ energy-intensive assets through our closed-loop framework: Collect. Analyze. Act. Our solutions span energy & comfort management, HVAC/R lifecycle optimization, technician enablement, and AI-driven diagnostics.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Verantum is seeking a highly technical, domain-expert product leader to join our Product Management team. This individual will serve as the company's resident subject matter expert generally spanning:
· HVAC and/or commercial refrigeration systems and components.
· Building automation and controls systems (BAS / BMS) including how equipment controlled
sequenced, and optimized in real-world environments.
· Facility maintenance and service / repair workflows (MRO).
· Asset management systems and equipment-centric data.
Reporting to the VP of Product Management, this product-centric role is critical in ensuring that what we build and sell is grounded in real-world operational truth while being packaged in a way that delivers clear, measurable customer value for enterprise-scale customers.
The preferred candidate is someone who has lived in the world of commercial HVAC/R asset management, who understands direct-expansion systems, fault diagnostics, capital planning workflows, technician dispatch, and the operational challenges that facility managers and service contractors face daily. This expertise will be the foundation for defining product requirements that are technically sound, operationally grounded, and commercially differentiated.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES::
None initially; potential to grow into a team leadership role as the product organization scale.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Product definition and requirements (primary focus).
· Serve as the internal subject matter expert on commercial HVAC and/or refrigeration systems, facility management operations, and maintenance and repair workflows.
· Develop detailed, engineering-ready product requirements documents (PRDs) for HVAC IQ (health scoring, capital planning, asset diagnostics, total cost of ownership) and Technician View (field-service troubleshooting, mobile-first workflows, technician self-service) or other interactive applications,
· Translate complex domain knowledge — fault code interpretation, asset lifecycle economics, technician workflows, comfort/cold-chain compliance — into clear use cases, user stories, and acceptance criteria the Engineering team can build against.
· Define and validate the data inputs, algorithms, and design (UI/UX) needed to evolve HVAC IQ through its multi-horizon roadmap (FM Priorities -> Capital Planning → Asset Diagnostics → Total Cost of Ownership and Repair/Replace decisions).
· Understanding of building controls and associated data is a strong plus.
· Articulate the processes and change management to ensure the technology is adopted and used as intended.
· Develop necessary training and communications artifacts in partnership with Operations.
Customer and field discovery
· Engage directly with internal stakeholders, customers' facility management, energy, real estate, maintenance, procurement, and finance teams to deeply understand how they prioritize work, manage vendors, plan capital expenditures, troubleshoot assets, and use (or fail to use) data in decision-making.
· Undertake ride-a-longs, site visits, and technician shadowing to identify needs, validate product assumptions, and identify gaps in current workflows.
· Partner with Solutions Architecture and Customer Experience teams to support pilot scoping, discovery sessions, and customer feedback loops.
· Understanding of building controls and associated data is a strong plus.
· When necessary, using applied problem-solving, rapid validation, and/or prototyping to bridge gaps between technical feasibility, user experience, and commercial viability.
Cross-functional collaboration
· Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Sales, Solutions Architecture, and Data Science to ensure product requirements are technically feasible and properly leverage Verantum's EnterpriseDX, TechView, Salesforce, and PowerBI platforms, real-time telemetry, and AI/ML capabilities.
· Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to develop technically credible positioning, competitive differentiation, and go-to-market materials for HVAC IQ, Technician View, and other services including bundled offerings.
· Support RFP/RFI responses with authoritative domain expertise on HVAC/R asset management, condition-based maintenance, and technician enablement.
Industry and competitive intelligence
· Monitor trends in commercial HVAC/R, facility management technology (CMMS, FSM, BAS), and adjacent markets (e.g., IoT sensors, AI-driven diagnostics, refrigerant regulations such as the AIM Act).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, HVAC/R Engineering, Facilities Management, Building Science, or closely related technical discipline.
· Advanced degree (MBA, MS in Engineering, or equivalent) is a plus.
Experience
· 8+ years of hands-on experience in one or more of the following: HVAC/R system design, installation, or service; commercial facility management and maintenance operations; building automation systems (BAS/EMS); or asset lifecycle management for energy-intensive equipment.
· 3+ years in Product Management, Solution Engineering, Technical Product Owner, or equivalent role — ideally within a SaaS, IoT, or building technology company.
· Demonstrated experience collecting user needs (e.g. primary user research), developing product requirements, user stories, or technical specifications that were successfully built and shipped.
· Deep understanding of how multi-site facility management teams, in-house technicians, and third-party service contractors operate — including dispatch workflows, work order management, preventive maintenance programs, and capital planning cycles.
Technical knowledge
· Strong working knowledge of commercial HVAC systems (rooftop units, split systems, chillers, VRF), refrigeration systems, and/or lighting controls.
· Familiarity with fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), condition-based maintenance, and asset health scoring methodologies.
· Understanding of building automation protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks) and how telemetry data flows from field devices to analytics platforms.
· Exposure to CMMS/FSM platforms (e.g., Corrigo, ServiceChannel, Brightly) and how they integrate into broader facility operations
Soft skills
· Exceptional ability to translate technical domain knowledge into clear, structured product requirements for non-domain audiences (engineers, designers, executives).
· Strong written and verbal communication skills — comfortable presenting to C-level customers and internal leadership alike.
· Collaborative mindset with a bias toward action and iteration in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
· Genuine curiosity and passion for improving how buildings are managed and how technicians do their work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· EPA 608 certification or equivalent refrigerant handling credentials.
· Experience with energy analytics, utility rate structures, or sustainability/carbon reporting.
· Background working with or for national facility management service providers (e.g., BGIS, Vixxo, ABM, CBRE) or large multi-site operators (retail, grocery, C-store, healthcare.
· Familiarity with AI/ML applications in building operations, predictive maintenance, or asset diagnostics.
· Comfortable using AI tools to facilitate work including developing functional and non-functional requirements, conducting research, and other activities required for decision making.
· IFMA (CFM), BOMA, or similar facility management professional certifications.
