Departamento Ingeniería PUCP

Lima

Description

About the Opportunity

The Group of Research in Biophotonics and Biomedical Optics (GIBIO) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) invites applications from outstanding early-career researchers interested in joining an internationally oriented research program focused on corneal biomechanics and advanced ophthalmic imaging. The proposed research focuses on the biomechanical characterization of the human cornea using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Optical Coherence Elastography (OCE), with applications in the early detection and staging of keratoconus and the monitoring of corneal crosslinking (CXL) treatments.

Research Topics

The successful candidate will participate in research activities involving:

  • Early diagnosis and staging of keratoconus using optical methods
  • Monitoring the biomechanical effects of corneal crosslinking (CXL)
  • Corneal biomechanics assessment using Optical Coherence Elastography (OCE)
  • Translational ophthalmic imaging

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions established by the funding agency:

  • Be 40 years old or younger as of July 1, 2026
  • Hold a PhD degree obtained no more than five (5) years before July 1, 2026
  • Demonstrate a strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English

Desired Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Biophotonics and Biomedical Optics
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Optical Microscopy and Ophthalmic Imaging
  • Biomedical Signal and Image Processing
  • Scientific manuscript writing and publication

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will:

  • Conduct clinical and experimental studies of corneal biomechanics
  • Acquire and analyze OCT and elastography datasets
  • Develop new optics setups, acquisition protocols and processing methodologies
  • Publish research findings in high-impact international journals
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students
  • Participate in international collaborations and funded research projects
  • Contribute to conference presentations and scientific reports

Research Environment

The selected candidate will join the Group of Research in Biophotonics and Biomedical Optics (GIBIO) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), an interdisciplinary research group working at the intersection of biomedical engineering, optics, photonics, and ophthalmology.

The researcher will collaborate with engineers, physicists, and ophthalmologists and will have access to advanced optical imaging instrumentation and clinical datasets acquired through ongoing national and international collaborations.
