Primary objective:

Student Assistants support teachers and students across all areas of the curriculum, both inside and outside the classroom. They help create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment by providing academic, organizational, and pastoral support to students. Student Assistants foster positive relationships within the Misk community while promoting student independence, wellbeing, and participation in all aspects of school life. They place the safeguarding and wellbeing of all students as their highest priority and adhere to all school policies and statutory safeguarding requirements.

Areas of responsibility:

  • Assist in supervision of educational activities, social development, and supervision of students.
  • Provide support to individual students and small groups under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Support students in mainstream classes across all academic subjects, including Physical Education, swimming (where applicable), and field sports.
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum, ensuring appropriate support while maintaining high expectations for student independence.
  • Support students with additional learning, emotional, social, or behavioral needs and encourage positive engagement and self-regulation.
  • Supervise students during lessons, transitions, break times, lunch, educational visits, camps, extracurricular activities, and other school events as required.
  • Help maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment by promoting respectful behavior and positive relationships.
  • Assist with classroom organization, preparation of learning resources, and administrative tasks as directed by teaching staff.
  • Build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with students that support their academic, social, and personal development.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, learning support staff, and other school colleagues to meet students' educational needs.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and training as required.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through excellent punctuality, attendance, communication, and presentation.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all students and comply with all safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies.
  • Ensure students are appropriately supervised in all learning and school environments.
  • Work effectively with individual students and small groups under the guidance and supervision of a qualified teacher.
  • Undertake additional duties as and when required by the line manager.

Safeguarding:

  • The post holder will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people and follow the school’s safeguarding policies and the staff code of conduct. They will directly support the designated safeguarding lead as a priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students at the school.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma degree (essential).

Experience:

  • +1 year experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with young children and understand their needs.
  • Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to adapt and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to set high expectations to inspire, motivate and challenge the students.
  • IT proficiency including all Microsoft and google office tools Microsoft office and google suite.
  • Able to work under pressure and prioritize effectively.
  • Experience in working with students who have a variety of learning, social and psychological needs.
