About The Role

The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in designing, developing and delivering innovative aerospace components, systems and tooling within Swinburne’s AIR Hub. Working across a diverse portfolio of projects, the role supports the advancement of cutting-edge technologies in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), advanced manufacturing and aerospace engineering.

This hands-on position leads the end-to-end design process, from concept development and CAD modelling through to prototyping, testing, manufacturing and system integration. The role works closely with researchers, industry partners and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering outcomes and drive innovation across the aerospace sector.

As a senior technical specialist, the Mechanical Design Engineer provides expert engineering advice, leads technical workstreams, contributes to research and industry collaborations, and supports the development of engineering capability within the AIR Hub through mentoring, knowledge sharing and stakeholder engagement.

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Experience in the design, prototyping, build, and testing of mechanical systems
  • Expertise with 3D CAD (preferably Onshape or Solidworks), or similar tools within a collaborative, configuration-controlled environment (PDM/PLM)
  • Experience in the production and management of mechanical engineering drawings
  • Experience in the design of components made from composite materials (carbon fibre, fibreglass) and its associated tooling.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Systems, or a related field with suitable experience
