VP of Finance

CULT GAIA

Los Angeles Metropolitan Area

Description

Position: VP, Finance

Department: Finance

Reports To: CFO

Position Summary: A prestigious fashion company is seeking a VP of Finance to serve as the right hand to the CFO and a strategic partner to the executive team. This role owns the company's financial reporting cadence end-to-end — from month-end close through board-level reporting — and leads financial planning, forecasting, and budget management across the business.

The successful candidate will be an equal parts operator and storyteller: someone who can close the books with precision, build the plan that drives the business, and translate financial performance into clear, compelling board and executive materials.

Key Responsibilities

Board & Executive Reporting

  • Lead preparation and assembly of the board deck each cycle, including financial performance summaries, KPI dashboards, variance commentary, cash position and runway analysis, and forward-looking forecasts
  • Partner with the CFO to develop the financial narrative for board meetings, investor updates, and lender/banking reviews
  • Build and maintain a standardized monthly executive reporting package covering actuals vs. plan, vs. prior year, and vs. latest forecast
  • Translate complex financial data into clear insights and recommendations for non-finance stakeholders
  • Produce ad hoc board and investor analyses with quick turnaround and a high bar for accuracy and polish

Month-End Close & Accounting

  • Own the month-end close process end-to-end, with a target close timeline that supports timely executive and board reporting
  • Prepare monthly financial statements: balance sheet, P&L, and statement of cash flows
  • Reconcile bank accounts, A/R, A/P, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, customer deposits, fixed assets, and related party balances to the general ledger
  • Oversee inventory costing, valuation analysis, slow-moving/obsolete inventory reserves, and markdown allowance calculations
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules and depreciation; ensure proper cutoff and accurate vendor invoice coding
  • Reconcile gross profit and ensure GAAP-compliant treatment across all accounts
  • File local tax returns (sales tax, property tax, LA City business taxes) and manage related compliance
  • Oversee bi-weekly payroll process

Financial Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process at the corporate and departmental level, partnering with department heads to build bottoms-up budgets that ladder into company targets
  • Own the rolling forecast — refresh monthly with latest actuals and updated assumptions; flag risks and opportunities early
  • Drive monthly budget-vs.-actual reviews with each department; deliver variance analysis and corrective recommendations
  • Build and maintain the long-range (3–5 year) financial plan in partnership with the CFO.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting; monitor liquidity, working capital, and capital deployment
  • Build financial models for new business ventures, product launches, channel expansion, and other growth initiatives
  • Partner with merchandising and operations on inventory planning, sell-through, and margin management

Team & Process

  • Manage and develop the accounting team; build scalable processes that support continued growth
  • Drive continuous improvement in close timelines, reporting accuracy, and forecast precision
  • Serve as the system owner for financial systems (NetSuite or equivalent ERP)

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance; MBA and/or CPA a plus
  • 10+ years of progressive finance experience, including 3+ years in a senior finance leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience preparing board-level financial materials and presenting to executive audiences, board members, or investors
  • Strong technical accounting background; comfortable owning a close and producing GAAP-compliant financials
  • Track record building and running FP&A processes — budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and KPI reporting
  • Experience in B2C e-commerce and/or wholesale; fashion or consumer brand experience strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite (or comparable ERP) preferred
  • Combination of public and private accounting experience a plus
  • Track record of building and scaling finance teams in high-growth environments

Skills

  • Expert Excel skills: financial modeling, pivot tables, lookups, scenario analysis
  • Strong PowerPoint / Google Slides skills for board and executive deck preparation
  • Exceptional ability to translate financial data into clear written and verbal narratives
  • Sharp analytical mindset; comfortable pressure-testing assumptions and challenging the business
  • High integrity and discretion handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Detail-oriented operator who can also zoom out to the strategic picture
  • Collaborative leader who develops talent and partners effectively cross-functionally
