About The Role

As the Data Engineering Specialist, you will contribute to the design, development, optimisation, governance and support of Swinburne University’s enterprise data and analytics platform. You will deliver scalable and secure data solutions, develop reusable and metadata-driven data engineering capabilities, and ensure data is trusted, governed and accessible for analytics and decision-making.

The role will support Swinburne's current AWS-based data platform (Redshift, Matillion and associated AWS services) while contributing to the University's future cloud data platform capabilities and modernisation initiatives

Working within the Data Engineering team, you will combine hands-on engineering, platform optimisation, operational support and strategic project delivery. You will also provide technical leadership across data engineering initiatives and contribute to the evolution of the University’s cloud data platform, supporting both current AWS-based environments and future capabilities.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate experience in:

  • Designing, building and supporting enterprise-scale data platforms and data integration solutions.
  • Advanced SQL development skills and strong proficiency in Python and modern data engineering frameworks.
  • Designing and implementing reusable, metadata-driven ingestion frameworks.
  • Establishing engineering standards, reusable patterns and platform accelerators.
  • Working with cloud-based data platforms including AWS and/or Azure.
  • Technologies such as Redshift, Databricks, Delta Lake, S3, Glue, Lambda, Athena, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory or similar services.
  • Dimensional modelling, data warehousing concepts and supporting analytical data structures.
  • Designing and implementing data quality frameworks, automated validation controls and data observability practices.
  • Implementing data governance, metadata management, data lineage and information management capabilities.
  • Implementing data security controls including data masking, encryption, access management and privacy controls.
  • Implementing CI/CD pipelines, DataOps practices and Infrastructure as Code solutions using Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation or similar technologies.
  • Supporting enterprise production data platforms, including operational support, incident management and continuous improvement activities.
  • Successfully delivering complex technical initiatives and collaborating effectively with business and technology stakeholders to achieve outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education, training and significant industry experience.
  • Relevant cloud certifications (AWS, Azure or Databricks) highly regarded.
