PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Working with the Tokyo Correspondent, this role will produce specialist coverage and analysis of news topics and events by gathering and producing news accurately and impartially across a range of BBC output. You will cover the biggest national stories of the day, finding engaging angles and producing content that offers unique insight and a wider perspective for our audiences.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

  • An understanding of the major social and policy issues driving Japanese culture and a demonstrable understanding of Japan’s role in geopolitics
  • Demonstrable experience producing digital content for social media platforms along with a clear understanding of stories that work for this target audience
  • The ability to produce and mix carefully crafted, engaging and lively radio packages and illustrated despatches
  • Demonstrable ability to translate content into compelling stories across text, digital platforms, radio and on occasion television
  • Ability to deliver for TV – working with the Tokyo correspondent to produce well-constructed TV packages when required
  • To find, verify and seek permission for BBC publication of UGC videos relevant to breaking news or emerging trends.
  • Provide leadership and specialist understanding on editorial matters for the rest of BBC News, as appropriate, influencing the BBC’s UK and Global News agenda.

Essential Criteria

  • Full command and up-to-date knowledge of written and spoken Japanese as a first language (or equivalent), along with complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • A full understanding of Japanese social and cultural customs.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience in using it to shape content and meet the needs of different audience groups.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Japan and geopolitics and the ability to oversee the production of impactful, original digital content as well as coverage of major breaking news.
  • A successful track record in a digital production environment, with demonstrable experience in social media and audience interactivity.
  • A clear understanding of the needs and profile of the target audience, with the ability to translate these insights into imaginative and compelling content solutions across text, video, radio, social media and on occasion linear television.
  • The ability to understand radio and to mix engaging radio package.
