JHC Consulting is an independent advisory firm providing private counsel to boards, chief executives, and heads of industry. We specialize in strategy and governance, focusing on situations where an external, dissenting view is necessary to sharpen internal thinking. Our primary partner is currently expanding its regional business across Kenya, which has increased the volume of mandates we manage through our internal software tools. We are seeking a Junior React Developer to support the maintenance and development of the platforms we use to deliver our written analysis to clients.

Employment Setup

This is a full-time, fully remote position. You will be hired directly by JHC Consulting, a firm based in the United States. While the role is remote from any location, we are seeking candidates based in Kenya who can provide technical support and collaboration as we scale our activities within that region. To be eligible, you must have the legal right to work in your country of residence. This role requires at least four hours of overlap with United States Eastern Time (ET) for synchronous coordination. The engagement is a regular, paid position. Our hiring process typically includes an initial screening conversation, a practical coding task focused on component logic, and a final interview with one of our firm Principals. We expect the process to take approximately three weeks from the first conversation.

The Role

At JHC Consulting, we do not use slide decks or traditional management presentations. Every piece of work we produce is a signed memorandum. In this role, you will be responsible for the front-end components of the internal system that hosts, styles, and archives these documents. Your work ensures that the interface is clean, legible, and reliable for the consultants who author the work and the executives who read it. You will collaborate with our technical lead to build new features and maintain existing interfaces.

Daily tasks include:

  • Developing and maintaining user interface components using React.
  • Building semantic HTML and CSS to ensure document layouts remain consistent across different screen sizes.
  • Translating design requirements into functional code while prioritizing typography and readability.
  • Debugging front-end issues and responding to internal reports of system friction.
  • Collaborating with our backend team to ensure data is displayed accurately.
  • Writing technical documentation for the components you build to ensure long-term maintainability.
  • Reviewing code from other developers to maintain firm standards of clarity and logic.

What You Bring

We are looking for a developer who is early in their career and takes pride in the craft of coding. Since our firm values the written word, we look for candidates who write clear, simple, and logical code. You do not need years of professional experience, but you should have a firm grasp of web development basics and a willingness to learn our specific way of working.

  • Familiarity with React and its core concepts, such as hooks and component lifecycles.
  • Comfortable using JavaScript (ES6) and modern web development tools.
  • Strong basic skills in HTML and CSS, with an eye for detailed document layout.
  • Exposure to version control systems like Git.
  • A background or interest in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • The ability to follow technical instructions and translate them into working components.
  • Strong written communication skills, as we rely heavily on text to coordinate our work.
  • The intellectual maturity to handle sensitive information with discretion.
