Job Purpose

The primary purpose of the EHS Manager is to lead the EHS function in Helsinn Birex Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

This will be completed by providing an effective and efficient service in the execution of all duties and projects associated with the maintenance of Health & Safety, Environmental, Security and Sustainability Management systems, practices, and procedures along with the promotion and training of same. This work is to be carried out within the EHS standards, GMP standards and work etiquette set out by Helsinn Birex Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Job Outline

The EHS Manager will lead in the following areas:

  • Further developing a site safety culture of respect and integrity with a focus on communication, awareness and best practices and behaviour
  • Providing the means for working towards zero lost time accidents and adherence to all environmental, safety and health legislation
  • Increasing the safety awareness of all staff through promotion and training and working with departmental managers
  • Monitoring site EHS performance
  • Maintaining the site security programme
  • Contributing to the management of the company and Group sustainability programme

The EHS Manager will have specific responsibilities in the following areas:

Health and Safety:

  • Risk Assessment Conduction and Review
  • Site/Process Inspections
  • Administration and co-ordination of the Occupational Monitoring Programme for the site
  • Audits – Internal and External
  • Contractor Safety Management
  • Development and provision of site training
  • Hazard control strategy

Environmental:

  • Trade Effluent Licence Management
  • Effluent Plant – monitoring and management
  • Water Sampling Programme (Effluent, Stormwater, Bund water, Groundwater)
  • Waste Management
  • Compiling and management of waste streams to ensure maximum environmental compliance and value
  • Ensuring Dangerous Goods compliance for the site
  • Generating Monthly Reports
  • Hands-on waste control
  • Control of external waste areas
  • Liaison for waste disposal companies

Sustainability:

  • Assist the Sustainability and EHS Director with Sustainability strategies for both HBP and Helsinn Group
  • Management of day-to-day Sustainability initiatives.
  • Management of site and Group ESG KPIs
  • Collection of sustainability-related data and support of company and group reporting requirements.
  • Administration of sustainability programmes.

Administration:

  • Management of site EHS digital management system
  • SOP reviews and updates
  • Review of Legal Database
  • Filing of EHS documentation
  • Carrying out of training and development of training programs
  • Site-Wide Communications/Promotion

General:

  • Management of the EHS Committee (or similar forum) and related projects
  • Participation company fusion teams and continuous improvement projects
  • Assisting in the preparation of Regulatory and Business Audits
  • Supervision of EHS contract and placement programmes

Responsibilities

The EHS Manager shall also be responsible for:

  • Performing all duties in a professional and compliant manner

  • Promoting and maintaining good management practices in the company aimed at maintaining positive employee relations and high standards of performance
  • Treating all colleagues and business contacts with dignity and respect
  • Treating all confidential information including sensitive personnel data with due care and attention and in accordance with GDPR
  • Managing all direct reports in a professional manner and in accordance with the company handbook
  • Ensuring that direct reports are effectively managed and trained in the tasks
  • Conducting performance reviews for direct reports and interviewing for open vacancies
  • Complying with company and regulatory practices. (e.g. GMP)
  • Ensuring that all activities comply with company and industry codes of practice with regard to Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality including activities carried by contractors
  • Completing all projects within agreed timelines
  • Keeping up to date with the latest legislation, trends, concerns, new guidelines and/or practices within the industry
  • Highlighting to the Director, Sustainability & EHS, and the relevant department any Safety deficiencies noted as part of daily activities. Participating in training and development programmes as is deemed appropriate by the Director, Sustainability & EHS
  • Participating in any projects associated with the Company’s Continuous Improvement program
  • Undertaking all training & development courses (both in-house and external) deemed necessary and appropriate to the job and your personal development
  • Maintaining one’s own training record
  • Undertaking all work-related travel
  • Aiding in the training of new staff to ensure that they can work safely and efficiently
  • Taking part in any projects associated with the company’s Continuous Improvement Programme

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Health & Safety Management, or a related field from a recognized institution. Level 8 is highly desirable.
  • Professional certifications such as the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent qualification are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in environmental, health, and safety management, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Strong understanding of Irish environmental, health, and safety regulations, standards, and industry practices
  • Experience in ISO certifications, e.g. ISO 14001, 50001 and 45001
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and implementing control measures to mitigate health and safety risks
  • Experience leading environmental compliance programs, including waste management, water quality, and hazardous materials handling is highly desirable
  • Previous experience in people management or supervisory roles, with demonstrated leadership capabilities is desirable
