Melbourne CBD & Beveridge
Reporting to the Head of Assets
About us
National Intermodal is a Government Business Enterprise wholly owned by the Commonwealth of Australia, dedicated to connecting communities with goods through efficient, reliable, and sustainable supply chains. We are transforming Australia's logistics landscape by developing intermodal precincts along the east coast, driven by a diverse team of experts in engineering, infrastructure, rail, and logistics.
About the role
National Intermodal has a full-time permanent opportunity for a Senior Asset Engineer based in our Melbourne CBD office, reporting to the Head of Assets. This role provides technical leadership to maximise asset performance, reduce risk, assure compliance, and optimise total cost of ownership across National Intermodal's asset portfolio.
The initial focus will be supporting key asset management activities for the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct, acting as the technical interface between Project Delivery and Operations across design, construction, handover, and operational readiness phases. The role is integral to delivering National Intermodal's Asset Management Framework and will involve planning and scoping capital projects for future delivery.
What you'll be doing
- Support the development and implementation of National Intermodal's Asset Management Framework, including Asset Management Plans, maintenance strategies, and asset information systems, while assisting the Head of Assets with continuous improvement of the framework.
- Contribute engineering input into asset hierarchies, criticality analysis, lifecycle planning, and maintenance strategies grounded in reliability, safety, and whole-of-life performance principles.
- Define engineering and asset data requirements for the EAM/CMMS system, including asset structures, failure modes, maintenance tasks, and intervals, and manage system testing and user acceptance activities.
- Develop asset handover standards and acceptance criteria, and review and validate handover artefacts including O&M manuals, as-built drawings, and commissioning records to confirm assets are compliant and operationally ready.
- Lead technical onboarding of maintenance contractors and support operational readiness trials, rehearsals, and transition to steady-state operations.
- Provide engineering support for the specification, evaluation, and acceptance of operational assets including RTG cranes, shunt locomotives, EWPs, and light vehicles, including FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.
- Develop reliability-centred maintenance strategies, define performance KPIs, and manage early-life asset performance monitoring and defect rectification.
All about you:
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or similar).
- Proven experience in asset-intensive infrastructure environments including rail, ports, mining, logistics, or heavy industrial settings.
- Strong understanding of asset lifecycle principles, reliability engineering, and ISO 55000 aligned asset management.
- Must have experience as a Senior Asset Engineer/Lead in project delivery, asset handover, and operational readiness processes.
- Technically rigorous with strong documentation, review, and analytical capability.
- Practical knowledge of EAM/CMMS systems and asset data management.
- Collaborative, delivery-focused, and able to influence without authority across project and operational teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build a culture of excellence in asset management across the organisation.
- Must be able to travel to the Beveridge site.
