Reflections from the Captain's Chair: M/V Ocean WarriorServing as Captain aboard Sea Shepherd Global's M/V Ocean Warrior was an incredibly demanding yet rewarding experience. This vessel, a Damen patrol ship of approximately 54 metres, is a powerful tool in marine conservation, specifically built for speed and endurance in challenging ocean environments, equipped with advanced systems and a robust engine capable of sustained operations against illegal activities. From the bridge, my daily shores involved far more than navigation. A critical aspect was ensuring the operational readiness and safety of the entire vessel. This included meticulous checks of all equipment, particularly the complex navigational, communication, and safety systems on the bridge. Leading the crew meant fostering a strong sense of teamwork and ensuring clear, effective communication at all times. The success of our missions, often conducted under pressure, relied heavily on the crew's ability to work cohesively. Regular safety drills – including fire fighting, abandon ship, and man overboard procedures – were not just regulatory requirements but vital practices to ensure everyone was prepared for emergencies. Safety was always the absolute priority. Beyond the bridge, responsibilities included overall vessel management, strategic planning for campaigns, liaising with other vessels or authorities, and making critical decisions in dynamic situations. It required constant vigilance, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to Sea Shepherd's mission. The role demanded deep maritime knowledge, strong leadership, and the ability to perform under stress, all while upholding the principles of direct action for marine wildlife protection. It was a unique opportunity to contribute directly to conservation efforts on the front lines.
