Zebulon B. Hurst (he/they), also known by his Hebrew name, zuriel biran, is a multi-disciplinary artist, educator, and scholar. Having grown up in semi-rural Iowa, his affinity for wide open spaces, prairie grasses, and silence is evident in the imagery of his poetic writing. Hurst’s work revolves around pleasure, pain, and language as a site (and sight) of failure. Part of the Cultural Organizing Team at Linke Fligl, a queer, Diasporist land project in Middleton, NY, Hurst Co-Edits Ki Li Ha’aretz (For the Land is Mine) alongside Chana Rusanov and Sol Weiss. A Presidential Scholar, Hurst earned his Masters in Theological Studies from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA and completed his Certificate in Sexuality and Religion from the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies at PSR. His research emphases were translation and somatics, respectively. Hurst graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a BA in French and Francophone Studies. - Designed cross-disciplinary, secular, multifaith curriculum for elementary students, covering topics of im/migration, morality, etc. - Co-wrote, co-taught spirituality and sexuality curriculum for adolescents in early to late teens, highlighting gender, sexuality, and boundaries to support students in navigating relationships with self, family, and community. - Served as a counselor and co-facilitator for Social Justice camp events with middle and high school youth, covering topics of income inequality, social stratification, and resource distribution.
- Remotely handled the organization’s most robust client portfolio, supporting 33,560 (22.71%) of national users in the NY region as compared to 148,167 total attendees in the US. I provided support for an average of 469 separate events each month, 117 clients per week. - Utilized funding from Jews of Color Initiative to plan and facilitate an event in order to recruit BIPOC users as part of Refilling Our Cups, a series of events to provide camaraderie and belonging across the US. - Participated in restructuring of User Onboarding Welcome Call Script to circumvent Host Misuse.
- Researched and interviewed prominent LGBTQ+ faith-rooted leaders, and added their written biographies to online archives. - Designed supplemental educational material to be paired with fully online archival exhibits. - Completed secretarial duties for Advisory Board, Jewish Roundtable, and Staff meetings.
- Taught English and Math to adult immigrants of varied ages in French-speaking classroom - Aided students regarding cultural issues and difficulties adjusting to student life - Strategize with supervisor regarding most-effective teaching style for returning students - Successfully completed month-long professional immersion as part of Commercial French Competency coursework.
