A graduate from the University of Manchester, I am currently working towards my Engineering Chartership, with the aim of passing my review within the next year and a half having been a professional member of the ICE, in the capacity of an Engineer Technician (Eng Tech.) since January 2017. I am currently employed as an Engineer (Assistant CRE in Network Rail parlance) for J Murphy and Sons, working with the properties team on the Network Rail CP5 LNW-South enhancement framework. In this role, I am expected to assist the senior engineers in managing the day to day engineering aspect of a project, from design right through to implementation. My responsibilities range from reviewing designs to producing technical queries, to ensuring the quality management is followed (in the form of Inspection and Test plans) as well as liaising with the site team and assisting with any queries they may have. As a team, we have completed a wide variety of projects including platform refurbishments, footbridge renewals and most recently retaining wall strengthening. Prior to working for J Murphy and Sons, my engineering career took me all over the world. From being part of a team working to upgrade the clean water system in Kampala, Uganda, to building affordable housing in the Amazon rainforest in French Guiana to interning in a design office in Melbourne, Australia. This diverse experience in the engineering sector has not only provided me with engineering skills across a number of different disciplines, but has allowed me to understand and integrate successfully in often quick changing and vastly different contexts. Working on infrastructure projects, be it in the water sector or in the rail sector, is what truly interests me more than any other type of project. These are the projects that help improve the lives of ordinary people. The most satisfying part for me is seeing the finished product; a reward for all the hard work invested during the design and construction phases.
