An aspiring doctor studying in the United Kingdom with a current interest in paediatrics and psychiatry.
I spent my 4 week junior elective in Psychiatry with an interest in Forensics. I worked primarily in the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (IPCU), where I completed mental state exams independently. I also spent my time in prison clinics, tribunals, the high security hospital in Carstairs and with the ESTEEM team. I additionally learned to fill out short detention forms for acute psychiatric care. I also experienced in-patient and out-patient general adult psychiatry, including witnessing ECT. Additionally, I did a few days in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Spent 5 weeks in Endocrinology at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, attending daily ward rounds, weekly educational MDT meetings and clinics including thyroid and diabetes
Spent 5 weeks in my surgical block at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, including 1 week in Anaesthetics and 1 week in the surgical assessment unit where I clerked in patients independently
Spent 4 weeks in the Ear, Nose and Throat Paediatrics department. Here I witnessed surgeries (including grommet and cochlear implant insertion), attended daily ward rounds and many clinics including BAHA & plastic ear reconstruction, cochlear implant clinic, audio medicine, auditory clinic, otology clinic and the rapid access clinic.
I led as Welfare Officer in the newly introduced University of Glasgow Climbing Society.
