Brussels Under the initiative and leadership of the ABJE/BVBJ Board of Directors, a new law was adopted by the Belgian Parliament in 2000 to recognise the in-house legal profession and the legal privilege for in-house counsels. Under Article 5 of the Act of March, 1st 2000 creating the Belgian Institute for In-house Counsels (Institut des Juristes d’Entreprise / Instituut voor Bedrijfsjuristen), advices given by in-house counsels are now confidential and protected. This new provision is based on fundamental rights set out in art. 6 (right to legal assistance) and art. 8 (right to privacy) of the European Convention on Human Rights - this is a critical provision that helps in-house counsels drive compliance across industries and businesses.
