My first exposure to a residential-based general practice setting, where I had the opportunity to observe the full spectrum of primary care โ from patient registration and consultation to investigations and management. Although most cases involved common primary care conditions, this experience highlighted the true essence of general practice: accessibility, continuity, and patient-centered care. Beyond consultations, I also had valuable hands-on exposure, including observing a trauma case, learning an ingrown toenail procedure, and performing my first venepuncture on colleagues under supervision โ a milestone that made the experience especially memorable. What stood out most was the accessibility of care provided within the community, reducing barriers such as transport, long waiting times, and financial burden. Efficient services such as rapid FBC results and point-of-care ultrasound further enhanced clinical decision-making. I was especially inspired by the doctors, such as Dr. Premnath Hema Anandan , who demonstrated professionalism, efficiency, and empathy even under high patient load. Despite time constraints, they maintained strong doctorโpatient relationships and delivered care with compassion. This posting reinforced that general practice requires not only broad clinical knowledge, but also strong communication skills, clinical reasoning, and empathy โ especially when managing psychosocial elements in patient care. A truly eye-opening experience that strengthened my appreciation for primary care and its role in the healthcare system.
