Yohanna Peter is a young emerging professional exploring opportunities in the development sector. He is a Political Scientist focused on research and teaching about development challenges in the global south, with specific interests in development policies and practices; climate change and conflict; environmental politics, and sustainability. He is also passionate about democracy, human rights, gender equality, governance, and peacebuilding. He writes and researches African politics, governance, and policy trends. Peter is skilled in implementing and monitoring development projects, research, data analysis, and fact-checking. He is currently serving as an Assistant Program Officer at the Centre for Democracy and Development. Additionally, he holds a certificate from The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) and is a Research Fellow on Humanitarian Leadership with a Professional Certificate in International Development from Dataville Research LLC. Peter is a member of The Nigerian Institute of Entrepreneurship and an Ambassador for The Nigerian Prize for Leadership (NPL). • Managed donor-funded projects on democracy, governance, peacebuilding, and information integrity supported by NED, NDI, EU-IOM, Tetra Tech SPRiNG, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the University of Birmingham. • Served as Programme Officer for the Tetra Tech SPRiNG Project on Strengthening Information Literacy and Social Cohesion (StILASC) in Kaduna State, leading stakeholder engagement, community consultations, and capacity-building activities. • Served as Programme Officer for the NED-funded Information Disorder Project, coordinating multi-stakeholder dialogues in Kano, Imo, Lagos, and Abuja to strengthen responses to misinformation and disinformation before during and after the 2023 General elections. • Supported the Netherlands-funded project on Strengthening Community Resilience Against Disinformation and Hate Speech by training media practitioners, youth leaders, and content creators on ethical reporting and fact-checking, and coordinating a Youth Media Fellowship in Borno State. • Conducted election, governance, and conflict research across Nigeria and West Africa, producing fact-checks, policy analyses, baseline studies, election observation reports, and the West Africa Security Tracker (WAST). • Served as Programme and Research Assistant on the University of Birmingham–supported Impact Case Study on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Against Men and Boys in Nigeria, working closely with Dr. Emeka Njoku on project coordination, research support, and implementation of community workshop and screening survey activities. • Acted as the primary contact person for CDD on the project, supporting stakeholder communication, field coordination, and administrative liaison between the University of Birmingham team and implementation partners.
• Led counter-disinformation efforts during Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections in collaboration with Daily Trust, producing fact-checks and designing infographics for social media publication to counter viral misinformation and electoral falsehoods. • Identified and debunked 50+ cases of information disorder across social media platforms within a six-month election cycle, strengthening real-time response to election-related misinformation. • Contributed to public education campaigns that reached over 500 students, improving awareness of the risks of misinformation and hate speech. • Maintained and tracked the database used for monitoring and documenting coordinated influence operations during the election period.
• Supported research activities during a two-month internship as a Research Assistant, contributing to CDD’s election observation and governance programme for Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections. • Compiled and disaggregated candidate data for the 2023 elections, including gender, age, and educational qualifications, to support electoral analysis and reporting. • Assisted in uploading and managing CDD election observers on the INEC portal and supported logistics for election observation deployment. • Contributed to the planning and coordination of training sessions for CDD state coordinators on election observation processes and reporting standards. • Supported research analysts by compiling datasets and assisting in weekly conflict tracking reports submitted every Friday to inform ongoing security analysis.
