I was born and raised in Mauritius, which means growing up surrounded by the ocean and developing a fascination with all things marine was almost unavoidable. Somewhere between reefs, tide pools and science classes, that curiosity turned into a bigger question: how do we actually protect and improve these systems, rather than just study their decline? I’m an MSc Biotechnology graduate with a background in marine environmental science, aspiring to build a career at the intersection of biotechnology, marine science and ecology. I chose biotechnology because I wanted to understand how engineering and cellular manipulation can be used as practical tools to improve environmental outcomes, rather than remaining purely observational. My academic training spans marine ecology and molecular biology. My undergraduate research focused on the stress eco-photophysiology of the red coralline algae, combining reef surveys, laboratory experiments and statistical analysis. I later pursued an MSc in Biotechnology at the University of York, where I gained hands-on experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and bioinformatics, including recombinant protein expression and purification, enzyme assays, Golden Gate cloning, size-exclusion-chromatography, SDS-PAGE, AlphaFold structure prediction and protein–protein interaction studies. My Master’s thesis investigated the assembly of the diatom pyrenoid shell, linking photosynthesis, marine systems and molecular function. Alongside academia, I’ve worked in ISO-accredited laboratories, environmental NGOs and marine education roles, developing strong skills in communication , teamwork, and quality-controlled scientific work. I’m now seeking opportunities that merge biotechnology with marine science and ecology, particularly within environmental research, marine biotechnology or sustainability-focused life sciences. If you work in marine biotech, environmental research, or applied sustainability , I’d love to connect!
Performed microbiological testing and analysis, including culture, isolation, plating and enumeration of bacteria, yeast and moulds. Prepared culture media and reagents, conducted assays for pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Staphylococcus aureus and ensured accurate data recording and reporting. Maintained laboratory equipment, adhered to strict aseptic and biohazard safety protocols and supported quality control through meticulous documentation and teamwork in a fast-paced lab environment.
Worked in a fast-paced bakery environment performing baking and production of bread, pastries, and other goods. Responsible for finishing and decorating cakes, doughnuts, and cookies, as well as packaging, labelling and maintaining hygiene and food safety standards. Assisted with stocking and displays, inventory control, and providing excellent customer service, including taking special orders and answering product inquiries.
Prepared and delivered hands-on educational activities tailored to school curricula and specific learning objectives. Engaged diverse audiences of different ages and backgrounds, communicating effectively in multiple languages. Conducted interactive presentations, guided tours and demonstrations to promote marine awareness, conservation and sustainable practices.Assisted aquarists in maintaining animal health, including preparing food, monitoring water quality, and ensuring proper care.
Monitored and assessed coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and marine fauna, including sea turtle and fish populations, through field surveys and environmental sampling. Collected and analyzed ecological data to evaluate biodiversity, habitat health and environmental changes, supporting conservation and management strategies.
Performed standardized analyses of environmental water samples, including BOD, COD, total and calcium hardness, salinity, turbidity, nitrate, conductivity and total suspended solids (TSS). Maintained data integrity through accurate recording and quality control using LIMS. Calibrated and maintained analytical instruments in accordance with ISO 17025 protocols.
