Research on fully integrated CMOS optical receivers. Using Schottky photodiodes - devices for which CMOS technology is not conceived - photons with an energy below the silicon band gap can be detected. This enables CMOS receivers for the single-mode fiber telecommunication bands. As these photodiodes have a modest responsivity, however, low-noise analog front-ends are required. The research can be summarized in two parts: thoroughly (experimentally) characterizing the Schottky devices and optimizing the SNR in the front-end.
