Willem is a strong leader and manager with over 25 years of experience in the energy business across the globe. He has 18 years of experience in the renewable energy business, overseeing the management, project execution and P&L of renewable energy facilities, as well as providing executive leadership in business strategies, and evaluation/execution of acquisitions. Willem has ten years of hands-on experience in the design, engineering, installation, commissioning and project management of electrical and control systems in the gas fired power plant industry. Responsible for the operations for all power generating assets. Since the initial investment in a wind farm in 2002, Enbridge has invested approximately $5 billion in wind, solar, geothermal, power transmission, waste heat recovery, and a host of other emerging technology projects. Together, these projects – either operating, planned or under construction – have the capacity to generate more than 2,700 megawatts (MW) gross of zero-emission energy (nearly 2,000 MW net). Today, Enbridge is one of the largest renewable energy companies in Canada, and our portfolio of renewable energy projects is diversified and growing.
My responsibilities include reviewing technical and commercial contracts from existing operating renewable energy assets for owners/operators whom are either refinancing their assets or are divesting (part of) their assets. Reviewing long term project investment models for existing assets and assets in development. Advising private equity investors on financial projections and asset performance. Performing due diligence on existing assets and providing recommendations for improvements.
Overall Management and responsibility for a 806 MW (Net 521 MW) portfolio of wind energy projects in North America. Responsible for the P&L of nearly $100M. Significantly increased EBITA and free cash flows. Implemented several $M in technical optimization projects all having an IRR of 25+%. Actively managed and negotiated over 50 main contracts, including PPA’s, LGIA, TSA’s, WMSA, financing agreements, tax investor agreements, BOP contacts, etc. Provided strategic and financial input on acquisitions and existing projects by performing ProForma analysis and leading the technical and commercial due diligence process. Presented asset performance and strategic options to the board of Atlantic Power, private equity investment firms and other strategic investors.
Responsible all Sales, Project, Resource, Safety and QSE activities in North America. Direct P&L responsibility for the wind business of about $100M. Developed a business plan for the strategic direction of the company in the US and Canada. Secured personally over $80M in construction contracts and $20M in service contracts. Implemented a new sales structure by developing a customer segmentation list, project tracking and forecasting, proposal management, reporting structures, and finally implementing sales budgets and targets.
Responsible for establishing and managing a new service division in the US and Canada. Developed detailed business plans for the US and Canadian markets to determine business opportunities and develop and implement goals and strategies to ensure long term growth for the North American market. Setting up frame agreements with customers, turbine OEM’s and other service providers.
