New Territories, Hong Kong SAR
I’m Liam Mak, a transgender advocate who began my journey at 16 as the first underage transgender youth to come out publicly in Hong Kong. My advocacy gained momentum through a TV interview on OpenTV, as well as my appearance in the film “A Woman is A Woman”. In 2020, I co-founded Quarks with Ming Chan and Zephyrus Tsang, after collaborating with organizations like Sexuality For All and Kowloon Union Church. My focus has been on transgender issues through media, public speaking, and community engagement. In 2018, I launched the first transgender youth group on social media, which has since grown into Quarks, boasting over 300 members and 6.5k followers. I’ve engaged with government officials and managed funded community initiatives such as "Diversity Hub" and "A Better Me | The Glam Up of Trans Women." Currently, I’m studying PR and event management, leveraging my experience in organizing events of all sizes. Additionally, I work as a research assistant and co-author on a transgender linguistic research project. As co-director of Quarks, I oversee events, creative programs, and administration, while hosting our Cantonese podcast series “跨口而出.”
The previous organization status before the current status. It began as a WhatsApp group created by Liam Mak and other transgender youth, growing from a six-member friend group to its current status as an official registered society and is in the process of progressing to a charity status.
