Hi everyone, my name is Vishrut Thaker. I'm a recent graduate with a BS in Neuroscience from Georgia State University. I believe that medicine not only gives us a chance to treat others but also gives us the privilege to be there for someone in their health journey. My solidified interest in medicine arises from cardiovascular and neurological diseases, particularly in South Asians. I currently work as a clinical research assistant with the Puja K. Mehta research team at Emory School of Medicine’s Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute (E.C.C.R.I)/Emory Women’s Heart Center and with Dr. Rafaela Feresin’s nutrition studies lab at Georgia State. Alongside my clinical work, I worked as an undergraduate neuroscience researcher in Dr. Angela Mabb’s lab at Georgia State, where I helped study dendritic spine density in hippocampal neurons in rodent models of Alzheimer’s. I plan to pursue an MD & MSCR education to further my clinical and research interests. With the help of Dr. Mabb and Dr. Feresin, I wrote and defended my senior honors thesis on a clinical project titled “The effect of a blueberry intervention on cognitive function and endothelial function in hypertensive individuals,” where I am utilizing my skills in analyzing EndoPAT 200 & Spygmocor variables of HRV, FMD, RHI, etc. With my passion for research, I serve as the webmaster for U.S.R.S. GSU, a STEM organization focused on increasing awareness and creating research opportunities for students. We host guest speakers, workshops for professional development, and a conference every semester. Outside of my research interests, I am the president of Mann Mukti (peace of mind), a mental health organization at Georgia State. Alongside raising awareness for mental health around campus, I am introducing a speaker series where we host licensed mental health practitioners, physicians, and experts in mental health to educate our students. All of my interests are guided and shaped by my faith in Hinduism, which has taught me to contribute to the world through individual acts of service, one step at a time.
