Rector | University of Aruba (July 2021 - October 2023) As the Rector of the University of Aruba, I led initiatives that shaped the academic landscape, fostering growth, innovation, and international collaboration. My leadership focused on advancing the university’s global presence and strengthening academic excellence. Professor Translingual Practices | University of Aruba (2021-2024) As a Professor of Translingual Practices, I focused on the language policy of CARICOM and the protection of Papiamentu under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. I explored the importance of education in the mother tongue, and the preservation of cultural identity in multilingual legal contexts. I'm currently engaged in cataloging the estate of Prof. Wolfgang Waldstein, now housed in Budapest. This project, which I am working on with my colleague Prof. Nadja el Beheiri, involves a rich legacy of correspondence, manuscripts, and books. Waldstein’s impact extended well beyond academia; he maintained close ties within scholarly and ecclesiastical networks, supporting colleagues and students across Eastern Europe during the Iron Curtain era. In June, we organized a conference to honor his work and contributions. Presently, I am focused on documenting the fascinating exchange of letters between Max Kaser and Wolfgang Waldstein. It’s inspiring to work with such meaningful archives, preserving the legacy of an exceptional academic.
The desire for scientific co-operation arose from the experience in teaching at the Summer School, and so the Academy for European Private Law (Akademie für europäisches Privatrecht) was founded by the Summer School professors. This is a scholarly group that meets once a year during the Summer School and debates a current topic of law and society. In recent years, issues such as migration and civil rights, tax law, Montesquieu and the modern constitutions, and animal rights have been discussed. The Academy has commented on questions of codification, most recently on the reforms of the civil codes in France and Belgium. Important research has been published in the Academy book series, and another volume on the subject of Emperor Justinian’s legislation will be published in the coming year.
Teaching European Private Law to students from all over the world. The Summer School is dealing with selected topics of European Private Law like the interaction between law and language, the evolution of a European Sales Law and the challenges of transnational law.
