NBE-Therapeutics is a clinical-stage Biotech company, located in Basel, Switzerland, founded by Ulf in 2012. The company focuses its activities on the discovery, development and marketing of next generation antibody drug conjugates, utilizing proprietary platforns or site-specific conjugation and linker payloads. NBE-Therapeutics was acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim in January 2021 and is now an external innovation unit of Boehringer Ingelheim continuing the development of a clinical stage portfolio of best-in-class anribody drug conjugates for the benefit of cancer patients.
4-Antibody AG was a privately held Swiss Biotech company, based Basel, which was active in the area of therapeutic antibody drug development. The company was co-founded by Ulf in 2002, and started operations in 2003 financed by over CHF 45 million. At 4-Antibody Ulf had developed portfolio of proprietary discovery technologies for the development of fully human therapeutic antibodies leveraging retroviral transduction technologies for mammalian cells. The company had developed a number of non-clinically validated therapeutics antibodies covered by more than a dozen pending and granted patents worldwide. The company had grown to a team of 50 employees until it was acquired by U.S. based Agenus Inc (NASDAQ ticker AGEN). At Agenus, a number of priclinically validated therapeutic antibodies developed with NBE's technologies have been advanced to late stage clinical trials and clinical validation, including Agenus' lead immune checkpoint inhibitors balstilimab and zalifrelimab targeting PD1 and CTLA4, respectively.

After the closing of the Basel Institute for Immunology, the research in the fields of B cell development and early hematopiesis were continued at the University Ulm, Germany, and the University of Basel Switzerland, where Ulf was a principal investogator in the years 2002-2003.
