Head of Technology @ Bundesdruckerei / Managing Director @ Maurer Electronics | Digital infrastructure that governments and citizens trust

Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany

About

With over three decades in the fields of software engineering and digital product development, I serve as Head of Technology at Bundesdruckerei in Berlin, heading up a division that builds the secure digital infrastructure that governments and citizens rely on. I am also Managing Director of Maurer Electronics GmbH, a Bundesdruckerei Group subsidiary working at the intersection of security hardware and digital identity. I have a background in software consulting and digital product delivery, most recently as Head of the Digital Solutions Practice at Zühlke. Over my 17 years there, I led teams and client engagements across Germany, Austria and the UK. This experience of agile delivery, engineering leadership and client-facing execution informs my approach to technology strategy and organisational leadership today. I care about building teams and cultures where strong engineers can do meaningful work. In my current role, this work has real consequence: securing digital identities, enabling public-sector digitalisation and strengthening the infrastructure modern societies rely on.

  • Lead Developer at IT Future AG
    Feb 1999 - Nov 2008 · 9 yrs 10 mos

At IT Future AG I was one of the two founding members in the role of what today would probably be called a "CTO at a Fintech company". We build financial information systems for the first German online stock trading platforms on the world wide web from the ground up. With clients like wallstreet:online, first-e bank, Cargolifter and other "darlings" of the new market we had a wild ride and growth journey until the dotcom-bubble burst in the wake of 9/11, taking >90% of our client base with it. I still am very proud that we managed to keep the company alive by pivoting toward solutions for more robust financial institutions and adapted our system for use cases of companies like Deutsche Bank, DVAG or the Sparkasse Köln Bonn. While it wasn't always easy at IT Future, my time there made me a better engineer, having to think in an entrepreneurial way as a developer, and really understanding that the applications I build only create value when they're live, and that they need to be robust in operations and easy to use. All of this helped me in my later career as a software architect, principal consultant and engineering leader and I wouldn't want to miss it!
