As a director of Extremis Publishing, I am responsible for delivering a varied publishing programme in order to advance the company's central remit of providing the public with the best quality of arts, culture and media non-fiction. Extremis Publishing was named Independent Publishing Company of the Year at the Scotland Prestige Awards 2021/22 and again in 2022/23 and 2023/24. Our other awards have included Publisher of the Year at the Innovation and Excellence Awards 2024 and 2025; Non-Fiction Book Publisher of the Year for Scotland at the Business Excellence Awards 2025; Independent Publishing House of the Year for Stirlingshire at the Business Circle Awards 2025; and Best Independent Publishing House at the Scottish Enterprise Awards 2025. We place a strong focus upon sourcing and promoting exciting new work by our authors with a view to reaching an international readership. I have many years of experience as a literary and publishing professional, working in collaboration with several publishing companies including Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Crescent Moon Publishing and Applause Books. My full-length works to date have focused upon subjects such as cinema history, interactive fiction and literary criticism, as well as the production of original prose fiction. My work has featured at international venues including at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as part of a major exhibition focusing on the filmography of award-winning director Richard Linklater in December 2019, and in conjunction with the Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre in Rio de Janeiro relating to an extensive exhibition on the life and films of cinematic polymath Mel Brooks in February 2020. A passionate advocate of the written word and literary arts, I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and hold memberships with a number of national writers' organisations including the Society of Authors and the Federation of Writers Scotland. I have delivered guest lectures and presentations about my work at many locations around the United Kingdom, and a regular lecture series at Forth Valley College on the subject of writing for publication. Although initially my field of interest was centred on cinema history, in recent years I have widened my output to include literary analysis and fiction writing. As well as working with a number of publishers to agree on projects and meet manuscript deadlines I have also been fortunate enough to present a number of public lectures about my work, with some of these events incorporating book launches. My efforts have largely been focused on writing full-length works, though on occasion I have had the opportunity to be involved in editorial projects and shorter texts. By agreement of Forth Valley College, I have been delivering lecture series night classes on the subject of writing and publication which cover the major developments in the industry, the challenges facing the publishing business, the role of new and emerging technologies in the publishing process, the legal and statutory commitments involved in publishing, and information about publishing in international territories.
Forthgiving is a local philanthropic trust offering financial support to people in crisis throughout the Forth Valley Area. As Secretary to the Board of Trustees, I am responsible for administrating individual and corporate grant funding applications, sourcing new income to continue to enable the organisation's ongoing programme of philanthropy, and engaging in awareness-raising events and campaigns to publicise its work.
As a Technical Advisor to the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum, I was responsible for devising a new strategy for the organisation's online presence, including social media and member engagement, and ensuring its ongoing maintenance. The SPRF is an umbrella charity dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Scotland's historic pilgrim routes, and its members are committed to encouraging public awareness of their cause. I was also involved in the development of new strategies devised to involve members in the continuing work of the organisation.
