The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) Indigenous Liaison Officer (ILO) operates under the umbrella of the Police Review Commission (PRC). The ILO is a member of ASIRT's investigative teams. The ILO works to instill public confidence in policing oversight by ensuring investigations involving Indigenous people and communities are thorough, complete, objective, fair and unbiased. In this role, the ILO provides support to the investigative teams for both Level 1 and Level 2 investigations. Level 1 investigations involve serious incidents, such as deaths, serious injuries, and/or other sensitive matters. Level 2 investigations focus on other statutory offences. The ILO ensures the investigators understand the cross cultural and community impacts of these investigations. While maintaining open, clear, and respectful communication the ILO builds strong relationships with the Indigenous affected person, their families, and communities. The ILO builds bridges of understanding between Indigenous communities and the investigative teams. The primary focus of the ILO's role is creating and promoting an ethical space for an Indigenous‑led, family‑first approach. The ILO ensures ASIRT's investigations are culturally informed, transparent, and responsive to the needs of Indigenous people and communities.
AMVIC investigators are appointed as peace officers and investigate consumer complaints in the automotive industry for offences under the Criminal Code, Fair Trading Act, Traffic Safety Act and Automotive Business Regulation or Traffic Safety Act.
