McIntire’s early career included leading the development team at the Digital Image Analysis Lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His research, which was primarily funded as part of NASA’s Direct Broadcast program, has been published in various IEEE and Elsevier Journals on topics including machine learning, remote sensing using neural networks, and parallel data processing using large scale clusters.

    Successfully led North American launch of Singapore-based Scalable Systems, which contributed to an acquisition by Platform Computing. Role included Product and Business Development. Scalable Systems developed and sold the first commercial version of the Rocks cluster toolkit, an easy-to-use cluster configuration and management package developed by the Grid and Cluster Computing Group at San Diego Supercomputer Center and its collaborators. NPACI Rocks was awarded "Most Important Software Innovation"​ by both HPCwire's editors and readers in 2004. The Scalable Rocks Cluster Toolkit includes the Rocks Console (RxC) which is a web-enabled Rocks cluster management console and integration with the open source grid engine scheduler from SUN. Scalable Rocks v1.1 ships with either NPACI Rocks OS or Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
