When you work in a startup and say things like, "It would be easier to write the documentation if you designed it this way...", they say "then you do it" and put you in charge of interface design. That's when you realize you need more foundation and this 'new-ish' software usability thing is scratching an itch, so you go back to school at night to get your Masters in Human Factors...and you start falling in love with the idea that you can build models that describe and predict behavior.
Perfect first job: writing user manuals (using my minor in Writing) and eventually help systems (using my major in Cognitive Science) at a software startup with crazy hours, crazy people, and tons of fun.
